Title
Leaf from a Thirteenth Century Manuscript Bible. Circa 1280 A.D. Italy.
Subject
Bibles. Italy
Description
The thirteenth Century monastic scribe developed great accuracy in the formation of letters. The long ascenders, found on the topline of this manuscript leaf reflects the practice used in the writing of legal documents. The inks used in Italy and France in this period frequently had a decided brown hue, while those used in England a green tone. The Italians in this and the successive centuries excelled all other countries in obtaining the fine silk - like finish for their vellum.
